real life

Some days I forget to write about more than work over here, so I thought today I'd do a little catching up.

Here are two non-work-related projects in progress.

womanof30 wip

This is the start of a collage piece. I found my boxes of old prints the other day and felt sad that they were just sitting there, unloved. I have a horrible habit of never making (or keeping) art for myself, and that's something I really need to change. I'm not sure where this piece is going, but I'm sure it will tell me when it's ready. The pages are from a ratty stack of antique books I rescued from a dumpster, and the base is leftover wood from when my husband replaced the floor joists underneath our bathroom. Someday when there are actual "after" photos, I'll make a post about the nightmare bathroom project.

This next item is something else I snagged from a trash pile. It's hard to get a good photo where it's hanging, but it's got a great rusty finish. I was undecided between attempting to re-wire it and sealing the rust, or simply turning it into a candleabra.

I think candles might be winning.

Etsy Shop

Lately I've been taking little breaks from sewing to experiment more with the whole power tools and fire thing. I listed the results on Etsy, which I think I'm going to start using more often. It's an interesting community.

Upcycling v2.0

This morning, I made entry #2 of 3 for the Etsy Upcycling Contest.

This bracelet is made from a silverplated teaspoon which had lost most of the plate on the bowl, and was therefore unuseable for food. The danglies are from an earring which had lost it's mate. The only new parts here are the jump rings holding the danglies on.

The best part about this project was that I got to use powertools and FIRE!!! =D

Listed here for $30:

Upcycling!

I finally finished one of the three projects I was going to upload to Etsy's Upcycling contest. These pajamas are made from a discarded cotton/acrylic blend sweater. Even the buttons and the bow are recycled! (the bow came off last year's Valentine's Day Godiva indulgence)

If anyone is interested in purchashing the pajamas, they are here:

Yesterday, I made a test pair of the bottoms out of one of the tee-shirts that was left over from the Naked Lady party. I thought they would be a fun project to try doing a tutorial for, so it's over on Flickr too.

ICE was fantastic!!

I want to send out a huge thank you to the crafty ladies behind ICE. They did a great job putting this thing all together. I sort of forgot to get a picture of our space, but this catches part of it... The warehouse it was in was amazing!

And This guy wore one of my hats all day long! It was awesome.

Indy Craft Spectacular!!

Saturday Dec 9th!!!

NDIE CRAFT EXPERIENCE HOLIDAY SHOPPING SPECTACULAR
The brainchild of highly prolific, busy-bee Atlanta indie crafters Shannon Mulkey, Christy Petterson and Susan Voelker, this year's Indie Craft Experience Holiday Shopping Spectacular at the West End's B-Complex is not only a great opportunity to stock up on the kind of handmade gifts that will pass muster with even your most discriminating alt-friends. The I.C.E. shopping event is also an opportunity to eyeball one of the era's most important social movements and art enterprises: the busting-out-all-over indie-craft movement. A portion of the door fee goes to women and children's shelter Hagar House. $5. Dec. 9, 12 p.m.-8 p.m. The B-Complex, 1272 Murphy Ave., www.thebcomplex.com

Whip it up!

I recently discovered the Whip-Up blog, and decided to make this necklace as an entry to their November Whiplash Contest.

whipup

The necklace is crocheted from tiny gold chain and is 14" long. I wish I'd taken pictures of it in the process, but crocheting chain is really difficult, and it tends to completely unravel itself if you let it go. Anyway, it's a combination of filet stitch and chain stitch. I'm honestly not sure if I should enter under skill or design.

I didn't realize when I bought this orange tree that the fruits wouldn't start to ripen for months. But they're turning now, and I see tasty tasty margaritas in my future, just in time for it to be cool enough to sit on the back deck and enjoy them.
